Large Baffle for Optical Systems

Overview

This baffle model consists of a fixed CFRP cylinder at the base which supports the deployable baffle and lid structure located on top.


The top lid has a triangular shape with two hinges on one side and the Hold-Down mechanism on the other.


The deployable baffle consists of 4 telescopic cylinders, one fixed at the base and 3 sliding elements connected to the passive deployment mechanism.


The opening sequence in orbit begins with the firing of the lid release followed by the deployment of the baffle, both actuated with the custom burn wire mechanism which uses the thermal knife concept.​

  • Constant torque spring (CTS) motorisation​

  • 4 segments, 1 fixed and 3 moving elements​

  • Deployment length ≈800 mm from aperture (adjustable, depends on requirements)​

  • Stowed height: ≈ 500 mm​

  • Saving Volume Ratio: 1:4 ​

  • Mass: ≈ 4 Kg
