Extra-Large Baffle for Optical Systems

Overview

This deployable baffle consists of 5 cylindrical Carbon-Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) segments assembled in a telescopic configuration.

Each segment consists of a large rectangular sheet which is folded to form the cylindrical wall of the sliding element, bonded on one end to a knife-edge vane.

The most internal cylinder is fixed to a base mounting panel, whereas the other 4 segments can slide to achieve the final deployed position.

The baffle is deployed using 3 wires which are secured to the outermost segment and routed through the other segments and held intension by a Constant Torque Spring (CTS), located on the base panel together with the Hold-Down and Release Mechanism.

Application

  • 5 segments, 1 fixed and 4 moving elements

  • Deployment length ≈890 mm from aperture (adjustable, depends on requirements)

  • Stowed height: ≈ 200 mm

  • Saving Volume Ratio: 1:5

  • Mass: ≈ 5 kg
